Republic Day is just around the corner and if you are like me and don’t have a lot of time to plan lengthy activity for your little tots to teach them something new about India this year? I hear you mommy! I do. 😉
If you don’t already know, we have a 4 and a 2 year old girls and it’s been a year since we have moved out of India. And because we no longer stay in India, we feel the urge to teach our children about our culture and values more, so they always remain grounded to their roots no matter where they move to in their life.
The other day we sat them down to talk about our country and I can up with this simple and easy idea of teaching them about our national flag. We decided to make pencil toppers, again with whatever supply we already had available at home.
Here’s what you will need to make your own pencil toppers:
What I did:
- First we cut a piece of felt piece, long enough to accumulate one end of the pencil. And stapled the edges on to the paper, making a pocket like opening to slide the pencil in it.
- We then cut a piece of white paper, just eye-balling the size.
- Then we cut out one piece from green and one from orange colour papers, you could as well use coloured foam pieces.
- Grab a piece of tape and fold it in half and stick the coloured pieces in place, over the white paper. White paper being the background and the middle section.
- Then I cut a tiny circle and taped that on to the white paper. That’s it!
The girls got there own pencils and put the toppers on. They absolutely loved waving their brand new pencil toppers up in the air and running around in the house.
What the kids learned:
Both our girls learned the colours in the flag. Now they quickly recognize the India flag when and wherever they see it. 🙂
